Seaport Village, San Diego
For our first mural of 2021, we returned to San Diego for our 4th mural in the city at Seaport Village. Our previous murals in this wonderful city were Greetings from San Diego, Liberty Station and Little Saigon. Over the years, we kept in touch with Scott Andrews, who made the Liberty Station postcard mural happen. He thought of us for this new project of his and was open to the idea of us creating a mural in our vintage luggage decal inspired style. Thank you for trusting our creative vision in experimenting with a new travel related series.
Luckily, we were able to get to this project in So-Cal before we planned on hitting the road for our 2021 tour. Being that we have the most murals in San Diego, we were humbled by all the people who traveled over to say hi and watch us paint! Thanks for the inspiration from fellow travelers all over the world. It’s what keeps us motivated to keep going!
This particular design had some similarity to our large letter postcards. We were able to incorporate multiple images into one cohesive piece. The wall we painted was also unique in that it was slightly curved which was a first for us! Luckily, the traditional pounce pattern method saved us as a projection would have been skewed.
In the past, we rarely visited this area of San Diego when we would come visit. A lot of the locals that we spoke to said that they had fond memories of coming here with their families growing up. Today, it’s a very popular tourist destination due to the proximity of downtown and the Convention Center. The location of this mural in the San Diego bay made for amazing sunsets which we were sure to incorporate into the artwork.
Lisa is always on the lookout for seals when we’re close to the ocean. We spotted some in the bay where the fishing boats docked and learned from a local that one of the seals that call that area home was named Oscar. Therefore, we had to make sure to incorporate Oscar into the mural since we were painting the fishing boats in one of the letters! There’s a fish market every Saturday at the docks. We would highly recommend it if you’re in the area and into fresh seafood.
Other images that we painted include the historic lighthouse which now houses Spill The Beans coffee/bagel shop and the iconic San Diego Pier restaurant known for their waterfront dining.
