Interactive Mural - Los Angeles Street Art
I recently designed and painted a fun, interactive street art mural in Los Angeles (Atwater Village.) This exterior wall art was created for a new dentist office called Sugarfree Dental. I absolutely loved that they didn’t want to go the traditional route of a business advertisement but instead wanted to create something interactive for photo ops for the local community. You can see a time lapse video of the creation below:
The concept was inspired by a mural I had designed many years ago for a music festival in Pasadena. This time, I worked with the client to fit all their different fun ideas into the artwork. For the color scheme, we went with blues and aquas to tie into their branding and the feeling of water/bubbles which are common in dentistry. The hints of pink tied into the concept of the mouth & gums. In addition to the word “Smile,” these were really subtle hints to a dentist office that didn’t feel too cliche! The rest of the positive imagery tied into the community of Atwater Village.
I hid in the owner’s pets which included 2 dogs and a cat. Local landmarks like Griffith Observatory and the new North Atwater Bridge (or La Kretz Bridge.) However, my personal favorite element has to be the iconic Beastie Boys image on the right. They had their studio here in Atwater Village and it’s an homage to a famous photograph of them near the Atwater Village sign. Finally, other images that filled in the mural included butterflies, hummingbird, flowers, palm trees and peace signs.
I left an empty space on the left side of the mural for people to stand and pose next to the megaphone. This was a great interactive photo op idea from our original mural painted for Andy Grammar that you can see below. Obviously, I’ve gotten a lot better as an artist since this piece was painted but it was fun to revive this concept for a permanent mural in the neighborhood.
