Largest Mural in Pasadena - Public Art

Pasadena's Largest Mural by Victor Ving Local Artist

Pasadena’s largest public art mural “Passage Through Pasadena” is located at 2830 E. Foothill Blvd. The impressive mural spans 86’ ft wide by up to 18’ ft. tall and literally cannot be missed as you drive by. The mural project was a collaboration between WOHL Property Group and local artist Victor Ving. The intent was never to create the largest mural in the city of Pasadena but as the scope of the project grew, it naturally took the title! We appreciate that the owners wanted to use their canvas to tell the story of the greater community instead of an advertisement or signage for their business. This is a timeless solution and I know that the neighborhood will be thankful for many years to come.

“I've created a lot of past murals featuring Pasadena's iconic landmarks and popular tourist attractions. Yet, with this particular piece, my aim was to shine a light on the less-acknowledged, yet integral elements that define Pasadena's unique character beneath the surface.”- Victor Ving

"Victor Ving's mural is a true work of art, and it beautifully encapsulates the heart and soul of Pasadena," said [Emil Wohl], Owner of Wohl Property Group. "We're thrilled to have this remarkable piece of public art as a part of our city's landscape, celebrating the unique elements that make Pasadena such a special place."

The mural beautifully portrays Pasadena's landscapes, featuring the San Gabriel mountains and Eaton Canyon Waterfall. It also pays homage to the world of technology and space exploration, with iconic elements such as JPL's Mars rover, Perseverance, the Ingenuity drone, and the historic Mt. Wilson Observatory. Additionally, the mural nods to the city's historical orange groves that played a pivotal role in its popularity. Located in Lamanda Park, the mural stands as a reminder of the area's significance as a hub for packaging and transporting citrus across the country. Last but not least, green parrots grace the mural, adding a whimsical touch to the artwork. At the last minute, I decided to add in a little black cat just to get people to do a double take. These last minute additions (like the bear in the Altadena mural) always seem to end up being the crowd favorites. After all, the mural was officially finished right before Halloween 2023!

This mural is a testament to the enduring human spirit that has thrived in Pasadena, where natural beauty and innovation converge. The San Gabriel Mountains rise majestically in the backdrop, echoing the challenges faced and conquered by generations of dreamers, explorers, and pioneers. The gentle cascade of Eaton Canyon Waterfall symbolizes the perseverance required to navigate life's turbulent currents.

JPL Rover Preserverance, Ingenuity Drone and Orange Crate

At the heart of the mural are Pasadena's remarkable contributions to technology and space exploration. Iconic elements such as JPL's Mars rover, Perseverance, and the pioneering Ingenuity drone serve as tributes to the boundless ambition and relentless pursuit of knowledge that have placed Pasadena at the forefront of humanity's quest to explore the cosmos. Nearby, the historic Mt. Wilson Observatory represents a longstanding commitment to unraveling the mysteries of the universe, reminding us that the human spirit knows no limits when it comes to curiosity and discovery.

In an homage to Pasadena's historic orange groves, the mural pays tribute to the lush orchards that once made this city famous. The groves were not just a source of prosperity but a testament to human determination and ingenuity, as Pasadena played a pivotal role in packaging and transporting citrus across the nation. These groves symbolize a rich tapestry of labor, hope and soul of the people who toiled under the Southern California sun.

Adding a whimsical touch to this artistic tapestry are the vibrant green parrots that grace the mural, a playful nod to the unexpected delights that can be found in the city's neighborhoods. These parrots symbolize the resilience of life itself, finding a home and thriving in unexpected places.

"Passage Through Pasadena" invites viewers to embark on a journey through time, landscape, and innovation. It encourages all who behold it to reflect on the interconnectedness of these themes. As an artist, I hope this mural serves as a visual reminder of the extraordinary journey that is Pasadena's legacy, inspiring us all to reach for infinite horizons, embrace our history, and contribute to the eternal quest of the human spirit.
