Bumbershoot Festival
Greetings from Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival 2016! Bumbershoot is a large scale festival in Seattle bringing people together from all over the world to enjoy live music, comedy, dance, film, and other visual arts. The year 2016 was its 46th year in celebration held around Seattle Center. We painted the Greetings from Bumbershoot postcard mural just outside the front entrance, welcoming the guests at the base of the Space Needle. Sam Warren, the Creative Director of the festival, reached out to us after seeing the Greetings from Seattle, just a few neighborhoods over in Belltown. For this particular mural, we painted live throughout the event on a temporary wall canvas.
Fun fact: Bumbershoot means umbrella!
We went from painting the Space Needle in our previous mural to painting at the base of the iconic landmark structure. It was an honor to be creating some artwork in the heart of the city. Our murals seem to be a great fit for festivals and events as we always end up seeing them photographed the most. There’s something about a mix of lettering and artwork that people can relate to (even if they aren’t into art so much.) The postcard murals act as both signage and art which gives it mass appeal.
We painted the mural in a public area outside the entrance to the festival. Therefore, people of all ages were able to come watch us paint. We had nonstop festival attendees and the public posing for photos during the painting. This was a great idea by the festival to showcase some free art for the community to enjoy.
Within the letters, we kept it more on the graphic side due to the short time frame we had to paint the artwork during the festival hours. In addition, we wanted to check out the music acts as well! We celebrated the mural by getting to see Tame Impala, Third Eye Blind & others. Thank you Bumbershoot and Seattle!
