Pasadena Music Festival & Climbing Gym Mural
Waste-Free Recycled Mural for the Pasadena Community
We designed and painted a custom Pasadena mural that was used for 2 different mural festivals at the Rose Bowl and then repurposed for a local climbing gym on Fair Oaks Ave. This was a great way to make the most out of a project and create less waste for our planet. From my personal experience in the events industry, it always upset me knowing how many custom builds were just sent to the dump afterwards. Everything usually needs to be done in a rush without regard for the environment. This was a great project that demonstrated how it’s possible to avoid sending everything to our landfills.
We worked with Visit Pasadena who had a booth at two separate music festivals in 2024. The events were held at the golf course at the world famous Rose Bowl. The first weekend was Cruel World followed by Just Like Heaven the next weekend. We helped design and paint a 8x8 backdrop that would celebrate Pasadena for photo ops but also customized to each music festival. Within the letters, we included the Colorado Street Bridge, City Hall and Rose Bowl Stadium. Ofcourse, we had to add some roses in the foreground as well! Our fabricator also repurposed some older flats so that we didn’t need to create more waste.
After the first festival, we went back to change the festival name on top to “Just Like Heaven” while keeping the rest of the artwork the same. This helps encourage more photo ops since the majority are there to show they are at the specific event and not just to represent Pasadena. These become timeless memories that live on long after the mural is gone. There’s also a organic look to hand painted artwork that feels warmer and more authentic than printed signs. As a result, we had a stream of nonstop festival attendees taking their selfies in front of the artwork across both weekends!
Once both music festivals were over, we had the idea to alter the artwork one more time for a local climbing gym called The Post. We had been in touch with them for a while about a custom mural and this piece perfectly fit within the space we were planning. This was the perfect match because the climbing gym was in an old post office. Together, we came up with the idea to turn the design into a postage stamp with a tribute to local legend Jackie Robinson (42.) We couldn’t be happier with the executed concept. Most of all, we felt great that we were able to reuse this artwork so many times in a way that didn’t feel forced.
