FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the Greetings Tour?
The Greetings Tour is a nationwide mural project focused on creating timeless landmarks through interactive public art. The traveling artists consists of husband/wife duo Victor Ving & Lisa Beggs. Victor Ving is a muralist that primarily uses spray paint to create these iconic large letter postcard murals. Lisa Beggs is a photographer that documents the project and also captures the photo references used in the mural designs. When possible, they collaborate with local artists in various cities to create these large scale artworks.
How did the Greetings Tour project get started?
The Greetings from Chinatown mural in NYC (2014) was the first mural painted where we noticed the potential of how much our artwork can positively affect a community and create a destination/landmark. We went on a west coast road trip later that summer and were inspired by others that we saw living on the road. Combining our backgrounds of mural art and photography, we decided to take a chance to paint and travel full time. We hit the road in Spring 2015 and have been loving the lifestyle since!
How does the project get funded?
Our most common clients are cities, destination agencies, and mainly the travel/hospitality industry. In addition, we have worked with various brands on commercial projects that we may not show in our portfolio. We also license our artwork and dedicate those funds to making more public art murals happen. However, from time to time we have donated our services to some good causes that align with our values and mission. We even started a mural grant in 2020 to help drive tourism to support local businesses!
How do you decide where you paint your murals?
Our travels are loosely based around our commissioned project schedule. If there are cities along the way that we connect with, we’ll try to make those murals happen in route to the next destination. Our current priority is creating murals in states where we have not painted in yet. This creates a larger connected network to incentivize road trips to “collect” murals. The larger goal (although no rush to do so) is to eventually paint in all 50 states and then take the project global!
How do you decide the imagery of what you design & paint into the murals?
When it comes to a cities that we are not from, we always refer to the local community to come up with the ideas of what we incorporate into the murals. To us, this is true public art that engages and creates a dialogue with those who live there. It gives the locals a sense of ownership of the artwork because we do our best to collaborate with them. However, there’s only so much that we can fit into a confined space so we guide them on highlighting some key elements which include: culture, history, landmarks and an element of nature. At the end of the day, we still have to express ourselves as artists and make sure it doesn’t turn into an art-directed design by committee job. A lot of people are not aware that the design process of these murals often take much longer than the actual painting of the mural.
How long does it take to create one of your murals?
The answer to this question really depends on the size of the wall and the number of unique images within the letters. Essentially, we create mini murals within a larger piece so it’s a tedious process. Because we paint at such a small scale with spray paint, it actually takes us longer to create these murals than on large scale walls. We try to keep them limited in size so that they stay interactive for photo ops. The short answer on average is that the murals take us about 7-10 days to paint (weather dependent.)
How long do the murals last and how do you preserve them?
We use the highest quality exterior paints to create murals. However, the proper preparation of the wall is usually more important than the paint used. We recommend pressure washing and fixing any structural issues before even priming the wall. On average, we would say a well prepared wall would last at least 6+ years at full vibrancy depending on the colors used. However, our murals are also supposed to be vintage postcards and like fine wine, it gets better with age! Depending on the direction the wall faces, we recommend various UV protectant as well as an anti-graffiti coating products. We have murals that live in hot desert temperatures and up near the cold arctic. We have murals that have been running 10+ years and still going! In addition, we would love to always come back to refresh murals when given the chance.
What's been your favorite place you've been to so far?
When we left our apartment in NYC, we looked forward to visiting all the US cities. That changed when we began visiting National Parks and found where the real beauty lies in our country. Victor’s favorite place we have visited is Alaska where we spent the summer of 2018 and got engaged. Lisa’s favorite part of the country is Southern Utah.
What's your favorite mural(s) so far?
Victor: Greetings from Alaska & Greetings from Hawaii / “These murals were a dream goal at the beginning of the project and once we made it happen, it gave me a sense of accomplishment. Also, they are specifically two places that don’t feel like the rest of America due to their remote geographic location. I feel that both of these murals really inspire me to try to take the project internationally at some point!“
Lisa: Greetings from Chinatown / “The urban & gritty location makes the mural feel like it blends in naturally with the environment. It almost feels like a timeless movie set in a classic downtown NYC neighborhood.“ Greetings from Bermuda / “Loved the calming colors and being able to spend time there to document everything that was used within the design of the mural.”
